Kilkenny….bangers & mash, Elvis, and hidden bars

And so our third day in Ireland has come to an end. However, we moved from Dublin to a little town south called Kilkenny (every time I hear the name, I think of South Park…I wonder if they get that a lot). Kilkenny is gorgeous and as I walk around the city I can’t help but feel that two separate centuries are currently overlapping. There’s the modern cars, ATMs and such on the backdrop of cobbled streets, craggily brick and stone buildings, and signs that indicate a pub or butcher was est. BEFORE our entire country.

Getting to Kilkenny was quite the adventure because even though our driver, Adam has lived here for a while, he doesn’t have a car here and driving is still very new to him. Not only did he have to deal with driving on the other side of the car and the other side of the road, but charging gears on the stick shift were also opposite! It was easier once we got onto the freeway, but the little (and I do mean LITTLE) streets in the towns on either side was pretty tricky. But Adam was a master of the daunting, and with the navigating from his first mate, Chels is seemed easy peasy lemon easy.

My highlight of the day was as we were heading back to the hotel from dinner at the pub we spotted this adorable gift shop/grocery store which Chels and I wanted to stop in at. The greatest surprise greeted us at the very back when we saw two tiny black swinging doors with the sign “BAR” above. What is this?! Could it be? A hidden bar? Lo and behold…it was the cutesy little bar and it was completely empty (a rarity by way of our experience of bars in Ireland). So of course we had to stop and enjoy this little quaint bar, which we did for about 2 hours. Overall, it was a great day.

Walking a pretty far way to the car rental place:

The above picture is when the owner of one of the pubs we went to let Adam pull a pint of beer. Pretty fun.
